The revenge of humanity might never end if we do not learn about Grace and Mercy from the Lord, Who has a lot to say about it:
"Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD." (Romans 12:19, NLT)
"Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD." (Leviticus 19:18, BSB)
"For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” (Hebrews 10:30, ESV)
"‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution; In due time their foot will slip. For the day of their disaster is near, And the impending things are hurrying to them.’" (Deuteronomy 32:25, NASB)
God seems to know that this doesn't seem to be easy for us.
"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." (Ephesians 4:32, KJV)
"38You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’h 39But I tell you not to resist the evil person. Instead, whoever shall strike you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And to the one willing to sue you and to take your tunic, yield to him the cloak as well. 41And whoever shall compel you to go one mile, go with him two. 42Give to the one asking of you, and you shall not turn away from the one desiring to borrow from you.
43You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’i 44But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those persecuting you,j 45so that you may be sons of your Father in the heavens. For He makes His sun rise on evil and good, and He sends rain on righteous and unrighteous. 46For if you love those loving you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what extraordinary are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48You shall be perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly Father is perfect." (Matthew 5, BLB)
"If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." (Romans 12:18, (AMP)
There are times when turning the other cheek won't lead to peace. We have also been given Scriptural instructions to bring wrongful behaviour to an end, especially if it's becoming harmful to us or to others: "15 If one of my followers+ sins against you, go and point out what was wrong. But do it in private, just between the two of you. If that person listens, you have won back a follower. 16 But if that one refuses to listen, take along one or two others. The Scriptures teach that every complaint must be proven true by two or more witnesses. 17If the follower refuses to listen to them, report the matter to the church. Anyone who refuses to listen to the church must be treated like an unbeliever or a tax collector.+" (Matthew 18, CEV)
Part of ministry training is to set boundaries. We need them to protect ourselves, our families, and each other. Sometimes, people will expect us, as Christians, to "turn the other cheek" and mistreat us out of their own pain or misdirected hatred. This is when we must consider Jesus' words in Matthew 18. The best outcome is always to win someone to the Love of Christ, but we must be wise about how we do that. Not every seed planted is ours to cultivate or harvest. Also, it is highly recommended to have a accountability partner who can help determine the right course of action for each circumstance. I am so very thankful for a little army of people who I can reach out to in such times.
