This is the same very large group of people who were fed from five loaves and two fishes. They had just witnessed a miracle or sign. They demanded more and many turned away from Him because they didn't like His responses to their demands. Humanity has a long-proven track record of forgetting God's miracles even soon after they had witnessed them. Ten stayed true, almost to the end and then were very quickly regathered after Jesus' death on the cross. Only four of His followers were at the cross, John and three women named Mary. (John 19:25-26) Superficial faith has no lasting value. If our faith is true, we should want to deepen it, continually. If we truly love God, we should continuously seek and desire Him and not just for what He might give to us. Jesus has already sacrificed Himself and defeated death on our behalf. What more should we want from Him? Should we not want to give our lives, in humble gratitude, in response? That is all He asks of us - but does not make demands. We know that the worker that begins at the end of the day gets paid his full wages (Matthew 20:1-16) and that the thief on the cross has found Paradise. (Luke 23:43)
John 6:30 "So they asked him, "What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?" (NIV)

In keeping with my backyard church services, I set up today, and the weather is glorious. I didn't have anyone preregister, but I set up a couple of chairs, some music and snacks, sanitizer, of course, and a spare Bible. I just set my playlist to shuffle and the first song to come up was the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah. What a great start. Before long, an unexpected guest came along who hasn't been to church in quite a while. Of course, I was able to accommodate their needs and I can't tell you what a blessing it was to see that person show up. After they left, I still had some time scheduled, so I listened to an audio sermon, spent some time in prayer, and in worship along with some more music, some Scripture, and of course I enjoyed a snack. For the record, the sunshine is already getting to be too hot for chocolate-dipped granola bars. Sure it was yummy, and not quite messy, yet, but I may plan for a sun and shade combination, moving forward. Being outdoors, there was some noise from the traffic on the road, but not bad. In fact, I thought I heard a vehicle stop but I wasn't sure. Fed-Ex came and went without interrupting.
If you're thinking of having a backyard church or even on your front step, and you're not sure if it will be right, give it to God and He will help make it a blessing. If you're not sure if anyone will show up, He will. It's good to just spend time with Him, from time to time. Be encouraged to make a plan, have an extra seat ready if you can, and just spend time with God if He's all that shows up. He's more than enough. If you don't have the ability to host something in person, perhaps a time of online prayer and fellowship might be good. Sure there's a record number of online sermons available, but it lacks that one-on-one personalized touch. Let someone know that you care about their needs. Maybe start with that; I'm praying for you, is there anything specific you want me to pray about? can we pray together?... or share some YouTube videos with someone if they have time and if they're interested. I might recommend the Chosen, but then again, of course I would! :) John 5:32
"There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true." (NIV) We can say anything we want and people are required BY LAW in some places to believe anything that we say. There is a father of seven who identifies as a seven year old girl. This raises a lot of concerns but here in Canada, where this dad is from, it's illegal to even question this person's decision. Does this mean that I can identify as someone who doesn't have to pay my bills or show up for work? Another person identifies as a dragon. We can say these things, have the law support us, and people are forced to agree with it. Funny, if I identify as a billionaire. the bank is still allowed to disagree. Can I have them charged for discrimination? How dare they! Saying something is one thing. Having people agree with you is entirely different. Being forced to agree with something makes one question whether or not we should. Should you not, after all, be forced to agree that I'm a billionaire? I'll happily do business with you and not have you charged with discrimination. Please don't respond to this in any way that might cause legal issues. This is not cause for debate. Just an observation that makes us smile and nod as required by law. Either we get it or we don't. We don't want this website shut down because we can't all agree that I'm a billionaire. Oh, wait. It IS illegal to identify as anyone who disagrees with this logic and it's illegal to identify as a protestor against the current health restrictions. Maybe identifying as a race car driver on our public roadways could be an issue, too. Please be careful of how you handle the law. Stay safe and maybe try to stay out of jail. I don't have any get out of jail free cards left. John 4:53 "Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and his whole household believed." (NIV)
Many of us pray and hope for our families, our "whole households" to be saved. Here, something remarkable, unmistakable had happened for this family. Just before this, Jesus had revealed Himself to the woman at the well in a remarkable, unmistakable way. It's not her goodness, but His that stirred up entire families and community and brought them to salvation through HIM. What has God done in your life that is remarkable, unmistakable? If you're not certain of anything yet, continue to pursue Him. He IS FAITHFUL! We must be careful. This can be an opportunity for people who preach the gospel of prosperity for some and against others. "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:33, NIV) The kingdom of God is about souls, not about riches. Gold is used as pavement, not as currency! When we seek God's kingdom, we learn that He wants none to perish. Let's make that the priority of our lives! This is why we're called to be humble, peacemakers, loving, and forgiving. The battle is not ours! The battle belongs to the Lord. Love the unlovable. Whatever they have done to you, they have done to Christ, Who has already died for that crime. "It is finished". Love the unlovable like their soul depends on it, because it just might. Christ reassured one of the worst of murderers a place in Heaven! There's very little that He cannot forgive. Justice belongs to Him and He extends mercy to the worst of us. If we have a problem within our household or our community, let's take it to Him. Sure, if there's any earthly thing that we can do to right our own wrongs, we must do what we can. Healing begins with forgiveness. Eternity begins with Christ. Whatever is beyond us, let's give it to Him, in faith. If we're looking for a miracle in our lives, first of all, the fact that Christ loves us is a miracle. The fact that He defeated death for us is a miracle. The fact that He WANTS a relationship with those that you care about is a miracle. Celebrate His love and His kingdom and let me know "what the Lord has done!". :) "46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." (Acts 2:46-47, NIV)
The time has come! Why didn't I think of this sooner? I wasn't prompted. I had thought of it, but details - and maybe that was during the last lockdown? We are allowed to have religious gatherings of up to ten people. Maybe it's time to revisit the concept of small groups or house church. Church isn't illegal, just large groups are and for everyone's health and safety, it's wise to abide by that. In fact, in this way, churches actually have received special favour from the government. Families, friends, and small businesses aren't even allowed to have gatherings of ten, but churches and religious ceremonies are! Maybe we need to stop complaining about what we don't have and start embracing what we do have! In the time of Acts 2, the church was full-out persecuted. Religious gatherings ended up facing public execution, often as a sport in the giant stadiums. And we think we've lost our rights?! Maybe it's time for the church to confidently show themselves in the humble, peaceful, loving Victory that Jesus has given us. If we become too proud, the government might choose to shut us down, but for now, doing so would be illegal. As much as I'd love to invite the entire Christian world to my doorstep, I think this is a glorious opportunity to invite my fellow faith leaders to do what they can within their own neighbourhood and within the law. Maybe you don't recognize yourself as a leader? If you love Christ, I pray that you seek that calling to share His love!!! If you know how to say a simple prayer, if you can at the very least play a hymn on youtube or your cd player, if you can stumble through an online sermon or simply gather for a Scripture reading, you're well on your way. If you can place a chair or two, six feet apart, even better. Where two or more are gathered, Christ is with us. The weather is improving, so we're more able to do this outdoors, which increases the opportunities for some. For increased safety, encourage people to bring their own lawn chair(s). We can do this! We just have to want to. We know how isolation is having a strongly negative affect on society right now. It would be a great time to try to offer something family-friendly, to include children, youth, the elderly. Your neighbourhood mom or dad might really love a coffee-less break with another adult! You might be able to offer something prepackaged, such as a juice box, a can of sparkling water, or a granola bar. If you don't have any toys, a pen and some paper can entertain for a bit! If they're too young for that, a pot and a wooden spoon for an impromptu drum solo! Maybe you and the mom or dad can entertain with a VBS song and dance! It'll be good for everyone! :D There's lots available on youTube! Just don't really "break a leg"! ;) Whatever gifts God has given you, it's time to explore them! Of course, now would also be a good time for the reminder to practice the buddy system. Never be alone with a stranger or any vulnerable person. Protect them and yourself. I know that I shouldn't have to say this to most people, but don't ask for money, please! God will meet your needs and most households aren't set up as non-profit charities that can offer tax receipts. If someone offers to bless you with a love gift, it's ok to accept. This makes me think of Queen Elizabeth II who isn't allowed to turn down any gift. Be a queen or a king and accept any gift, graciously, but there should be no need to ask and certainly do not set any expectations. People are hurting and suffering. We are not to exploit them. We need to be a Godly blessing to them, now, more than ever! I feel as though I would love to set up a social media site to let people know where there are gatherings but I also feel as though that might become a battle field with critics. I think we need to just keep it low profile, within each person's circle. Invite a friend to invite a friend, if you can manage the safe distancing for two. :) If you need any help planning or organizing, let me know. I'd be happy to help. 226-231-0914 or find me on FB. For Ontario, here's our current guidelines: "Weddings, funerals and other religious services, rites or ceremonies For weddings, funerals and other religious services, rites or ceremonies:
Drive-in services, rites or ceremonies permitted, subject to certain conditions. Virtual services permitted." A Bible study or sermon can absolutely be considered a service or ceremony. One other necessity would be the proof of an "organized" gathering. You'll need to do contact tracing and screening. Name, phone number, and yes or no to the standard questions: symptoms, contact with someone with covid, have you been out of the country? Just keep a list in case you're ever confronted by any authorities, which could include the police or your local health unit and you should be just fine instead of fined. We are held accountable to God and to the government that He allows in office. If you do not have the ability to host a "house church", you can still have a religious gathering, perhaps at a local park or along the trail. If you need to have your gathering in a public place, though, I would strongly consider keeping this even smaller than the limit of ten. Mask exemptions don't even seem to exist anymore under the new guidelines, so do what you can about that and absolutely protect your social distancing. In public, it's even more likely that you are being watched. Let this be for good reason!!! You may find others who need a tiny church gathering, a time of prayer and learning about the love of God! And do I even need to say it, but for the record, no, you can't just go ahead and throw a party and call it church. LOL So, the time has come if you're not doing this already! Be a blessing and be blessed! Psalm 122:1, "I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.” (NLT) If we want to sit and wait for this to be over, there are top experts who recognize that we have not conquered other viruses such as the flu or the common cold and that this may never end. Time is valuable. What are we doing with it? The time has come! We must move forward!!! John 3:2, "He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him." "(NIV)
Nicodemus recognized Jesus' authority without understanding the concept of being born again. As "a member of the Jewish ruling council", he had great Biblical knowledge, but as we can see right here, knowledge alone cannot save. I believe that it was by faith that Nicodemus recognized Jesus' authority. As a top Biblical leader when this information was very newly revealed, he likely thought that he needed the knowledge as well. How else could he even be allowed to teach it to others? It's good to ask questions. While looking up some information about the differences between faith and knowledge, I found this and it's excellent: Tim Stratton says, "In conclusion, I agree... that Christians aren’t only people of faith, but people of a faith that is justified by logic, data, and evidence, rather than by presuppositions and baseless personal opinions (which seems to be the case with many atheists).[4] When Christians attain this knowledge of God and Scripture, their faith will grow extremely strong which will be evident in their prayer lives, their Christian walk, and their commitment to fulfilling the Great Commission. Evangelism will quickly transform from something that Christians are scared of into something they eagerly anticipate. When one possesses knowledge, he has things he knows to share with others. When Christians share their faith, rooted in knowledge of reality, these evangelical encounters will quickly multiply with awesome results! On the side of Truth (John 18:37)" I am a naturally curious person. I love to learn! As I continue to study and learn, the most startling thing that I find is how little I know. LOL We can't all be experts in everything. We do have limits. But we can also continue to pursue our full potential, as long as we are able. I find I learn best when I have something to relate new ideas to. Math, for example, as long as math is nothing but a bunch of random numbers that relate to nothing, it's meaningless to me. When math becomes the size of a room or yard or city or nation, when I can compare and contrast one from another, then math becomes very relevant. Even now, apparently it's a day that ends in y, right?! Yes, it's Sunday, there's church today, so I do have something to base my understanding of time on, but most days, lately, it seems pretty elusive. I go to church and I go to work, so I have to maintain some connection to time, but for the rest of the week, month and even years are becoming less defined. When my husband and I try to remember when something happened, our best guideline is what children we had at the time, or where we lived.
Watching The Chosen has shown me how little I know about characters and places of the Bible. Even with my curiosity, even if I do learn something, retaining or recalling the information is a whole other issue. I think a good starting point is to be intentional about all of this. Setting goals is good, but being flexible is good, too. For me, I'm going to try to learn something new about at least one person and/or a place in the Bible, each day. This won't necessarily be a deep study of each person or place, but perhaps enough to help me relate each to others of the time or even to life today. :) I have learned quite a bit about Mary of Magdala, first from the Chosen, but then by looking up all the Scriptures about her. I used to like to just focus on God/Jesus, but as important as The Holy Trinity is, the Bible also shows us how much God cares for us, for each of us, that each of us has a story, and even from the Book of Revelation, "For the accuser of our brothers and sisters b has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night. 11And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." (Rev 12:10b-11a,NLT). Apparently the stories of others really DO matter! With the latest episodes, I have decided that I want to learn more about Philip and Nathaniel - which just adds to the long "to-do" list of Biblical characters that I want to learn more about! A reason to dig deeper into Scripture?! Awesome! :D Just looking up Nathaniel, even his name is wonderful - "Nathaniel (less frequently, Nathanel, Nathanael or Nathanial) is a given name derived from the Greek form of the Hebrew נְתַנְאֵל (Netan'el), meaning "God/El has given" or "Gift of God/El." " and from the Urban Dictionary?! "A male of superiority, wits and killer good-looks. Most Nathaniel's will be on the sweet side, mostly joking his way through things, and genuinely an amazing guy to ..." I didn't know that, either. But this... 45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”46“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. 47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” 50Jesus said, “You believe h because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51He then added, “Very truly I tell you, i you j will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ k the Son of Man.” What does this tell us about our presumptions? What does it tell us about what Jesus knows about us, whether we have presumptions or not? What else can we learn about ourselves from each other?! Have you found a reason to explore your Bible yet? I think I have! <3 John 2:4 "Woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My hour has not yet come." (NIV)
Did Jesus not know whether or not He was ready to perform miracles? I'm sure He did! We know that: "Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything." (1 John 3:20, NLT) So why this particular dialogue? I'm not so sure that it's to test Jesus' readiness but perhaps humanity's acknowledgement of Who He is. Did He lie about His hour not yet having come? Not likely. His hour may have arrived at that very next moment when she speaks to the servants in faith. Time is a very different concept for God than it is for us. I stand corrected! It happens - a lot! We're all a work in progress and life is full of thoughts and opportunities to be explored. Making mistakes is part of the learning process. We just need to be careful not to make harmful mistakes whenever possible. So, right now, I'm multi-tasking - of course. Season two, episode four of The Chosen is set to be released, this coming Tuesday, so I'm watching S2E1 again, right now. I had just mentioned, how many days ago, that Jesus is a teacher and a minister, but maybe not a preacher. And in The Chosen, the character of Jesus says that he's here to preach the Good News of the Kingdom of Heaven. Yes, Jesus did that, and of course, He did it perfectly! Maybe I'd love these reminders BEFORE I say the wrong things, or maybe there's a learning purpose in all of that, too. We are not to trust the words of mankind - the only reliable Word is the Word of God! I am thankful that The Chosen, for me, stirs up a deeper passion for The Word!
Suddenly, I love how this correction ties slightly to yesterday's short unposted post: John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (NIV) One professor set me right on fire by bringing the Greek into this verse. In the beginning was the logos, the logic. I looked the definition up for a sermon that I'm writing, and one of the definitions is "divine inspiration". At first, I found this verse just down right confusing, especially when reading a little further. That first professor who explained this verse, also taught us to dig deeper when there's scripture that we don't agree with or don't understand. Wise words. Thankfully, especially with the internet, we have more resources to help us learn, but we must also never underestimate what we can learn in direct communion with God's Holy Spirit. We must pray and search His living and active Word. I am thankful that my classes stir up a deeper passion for The Word! Yesterday, there wasn't a devo published, due to various circumstances, including some time restraints. I worked three jobs and have been called back to a fourth. Each job was for a minimal number of hours (and pay, which is why so many), but they also allow me the flexibility that I need for our beekeeping, for family, and for ministry. One of the benefits of having such a flexible schedule is that I was able to attend a Bible study. I don't know how many churches are open right now, here in Simcoe, through this current lockdown, but I know of one and possibly two. I'd love to know if there's others. People often turn to church when in a time of crisis and I don't ever remember such a crisis as this pandemic. Not every family might be affected directly by the virus, but most families are very likely impacted by the ongoing restrictions in some way or another. It has been a very long year. But back to the Bible study. One benefit of being there is the reminder that God continues to allow this and every situation that we experience - and the reminder to seek out why He does. What is His plan, His goal, and what is my role in that plan? Here am I, God, send me! Another benefit of being there is the encouragement of learning and being in fellowship together. We're currently only allowed groups of ten, maximum, but that's enough to be encouraged. We did happen to have a short and mild disagreement over a point that came up. It's one of those points that's not fully clarified in Scripture. It's one of those points that direct us deeper into Scripture. I am thankful that our Bible study stirs up a deeper passion for the Word! As if Holy Spirit has something specific to lay on my heart today, I'm watching this episode of The Chosen, again, and another thought comes up. When I first heard about it, I wasn't interested in The Chosen. Great, another cheesy show about Jesus or Christianity? Not at all! Praise God! But when I first started watching it, I realized how easy it would be to pick at every single moment in the show. It's man-made, after-all. There's got to be lots to pick at. I then decided that I wasn't going to spend that kind of time, dissecting the entire series. It's lengthy and I'm bound to miss something or get something wrong. But is it really picking it apart or is it an opportunity to find little treasures within? And do they all need to be found at once? Yay! But all of this got me thinking even more. What if we were like that with our Bibles? What if we were so passionate about Scripture that we want to discover every little treasure within? Sure, if we've found Jesus, we've found the Ultimate Treasure! But if that's all there was to know or to learn then the Bible would just say "Jesus loves you and you need Him" and leave it at that. As someone who's distributed thousands of Scriptures, I have had at least one copy of some sort of adventure Bible. It was written for a young audience and when you have so many to move, you don't think much of everything that's available. I'm not one for writing or colouring in my Bible and have really turned to the usefulness of online Scriptures and Bible apps, but maybe it's time to go back to paper, dig out all my pretty colours, and actively seek out the treasures within! Anyone who knows me at all, knows that I do treasure "Little Pieces of Heaven", whether they're stones or even plastic beads that represent stones, or the people that I will spend eternity with, or the little truth nuggets of God's infinite love for us. I am thankful that my crazy, hectic, chaotic life stirs up a deeper passion for the Word! And in that Word, He is the Peace beyond understanding, the Order over chaos, the One Who quiets me with His love. I am thankful. I am also thankful, as I prepare to post this, that He is able to take our mistakes and use them for His glory! I do not have to be afraid to be human! I am who God created me to be, He knew my challenges before I did, and He is able to do great things with my misgivings. He knows that I try to do better. In my imperfections, I see His Perfection. How Great is Our God! <3 “People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care”
― Theodore Roosevelt What?! Not starting a devo with Scripture?! What?! Now what does the Bible have to say about this?! First of all, what does the Bible say about knowledge? What about caring for one another? Openbible is great for both of these questions because it gives 100 Scripture references on any topic that has that many available, including what the Bible says about caring for others. Have you ever heard the phrase, "preaching to the choir"? Preaching to the choir means you are trying to make believers out of people who already believe, or convince people who are already convinced. It can be perceived as unsolicited, condescending, or lacking care for your audience, typically at best. Yes, once in a while it's nice to know that you're on the same page as someone else, but there are limits!!! I'm a preacher, so I have to work really hard at keeping this in mind! This is where I count on my accountability partners, big time! But I'm also a life coach, which means that I've spent a great deal of time learning to ask questions, and as a minister, learning to listen. In fact that right there is the difference between a preacher and a minister! One who talks verses one who listens. What about teachers? We need teachers. Think of the best teachers you've ever had. Do you remember a single word spoken by the monotonous ones who copied notes straight from their notes onto the (age check here,) chalkboard? Do you ever remember wondering if those classes would never end? LOL What about the teachers who asked lots of questions, gave lots of opportunity to engage the entire class? Unfortunately, my eagerness to please and my insatiable curiosity found me to be unpopular with both teachers and fellow students, with my unwitting "pick me, pick me" attitude. And you thought schools were for education?! It totally depended on the teacher! The teacher set the environment. Engage or hypnotize. Back to the Bible, I found this about Jesus asking questions. I can't say it any better at all, so it's all quote: ----- Earlier this year I took time to do my own research and to my amazement I discovered that in the New International Version there are exactly 339 Questions Jesus Asked*: Matthew – Jesus Asked 109 Questions Mark – Jesus Asked 68 Questions Luke – Jesus Asked 107 Questions John – Jesus Asked 55 Questions 339 Total Questions Jesus AskedI made a quick search of the internet thinking someone before me has certainly compiled this list. I could not find a compilation of 300 plus questions that Jesus asked. Please keep in mind that, while I am a follower of Jesus and faithfully read the Scriptures, I am not a Seminary Professor or a Pastor or a Seminary Student. I have really been quite amazed that no one has previously compiled and posted all 339 Questions that Jesus Asked. ------ I did not check to see how many of those questions were repeated from one book to the next. So, now my question is, was Jesus (is Jesus) a preacher or a minister? He's definitely a teacher and his students knew Him as "Rabbi". But we've seen that teaching can go both ways. He spoke with Divine authority that baffled the most educated of the day yet was clearly understood by the society's lowest classes. Sure, He gave us the Sermon on the Mount and lots of educational parables. Oh, wait! The parables were based on the current lifestyle situations of the day. They were relatable! Some piqued curiosity, giving the listeners something to think about. Not all mysteries were revealed at the time and still haven't been. Are these the things that we think we can "preach"? We might get asked how we know or why we know that God is real, for example. Is that something that we can answer in a convincing way? Is it something we're even supposed to answer? I might tell you how God is real in my life, if you ask, or even if you don't, but I'm working on that. How much more of a witness would it be to have the questioner ask God Himself whether or not He's real? We might not want to expect instant answers, but God IS absolutely faithful to those who earnestly seek Him! It's not like we can just carry around a little box of God's glory and open it up on demand. God is not a magic genie. Is Jesus a preacher or a minister? How much of His life did He spend ministering to the needs of the sick, the poor, the oppressed, ... and did He not teach His followers to do the same? Love God and love one another - doesn't that sound familiar?! He piqued curiosity and of course had the answers to give, when He felt it was appropriate to give them. Are you a preacher or a minister? and is it effective? Do people go running to you with questions or do they try to avoid you in person or online? Do you really want to reach the ends of the earth? Do you really want to encourage other believers? We're all a work in progress, even me. <3 But I know, without a doubt, that I want to be like Jesus when I grow up!!! |
